There is not much in life that can surpass the feeling of taking a whitetail deer buck – whether the deer is heavily antlered or not plays second fiddle to the knowledge the you were able to outsmart one of nature’s most elusive animals. Scoring your whitetail deer can feel like a daunting task, but with the right guidance you can rest assured that you will be able to get the correct measurements. The below information is available on the Boone and Crockett website www.boone-crockett.org – From there you can also find out how to contact an official scorer in your area as well as minimum scoring requirements for not only whitetail deer (I believe the minimum is 150 points), but also a myriad of other species. For detailed measurement graphics go to http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/tv/hints/rack_meas.pdf
Please note that all measurements should be taken with a quarter inch flexible steel tape measure. Also note that measurements are rounded to the nearest eighth inch.
1. The number of points on each antler – To be considered a point, the protrusion must be 1″ long. Points are measured from the tip of the point to the base.
2. Tip to tip spread – Measured from the tips of the main beams.
3. Greatest spread – Between perpendiculars at a right angle to the center-line of the skull.
4. Inside spread of main beams – Measured at a right angle to the center-line of the skull at the widest point.
5. Total abnormal point lengths – These are points that are atypical in location.
6. Length of main beam – Measured from the center of the lowest outside edge of burr to the most distant point of the main beam.
7. Length of normal points – Taken from points that protrude from the main beam. Measured from nearest point near main beam.
8. Circumferences for each detailed measurement.
